Adventure enthusiasts should set aside Saturday April 16th for the BMW GS Rallye, a gravel and sealed road ride to honour the BMW GS models that have defined dual purpose riding for the last 35 years.
The GS Rallye venue is Raglan west of Hamilton, with the ride HQ at the Raglan Club right in the centre of the picturesque seaside town. Organisers of the event are Kiwi Rider magazine, with the support of BMW NZ. Event co-ordinator is John Nicholson who has run ten BMW NZ Safaris and many other rides.
Nick Lewis BMW Motorrad National Sales manager says that BMW are proud to back a ride that will cater for the unique combination of capabilities that the GS models represent. ‘Our concept is that the GS Rallye will combine all the elements that GS owners will enjoy, great riding and scenery, a fun venue and the chance to show off their bikes and socialise with like-minded enthusiasts.’
While the GS Rallye is BMW supported, the ride is open to riders on any brand and capacity of road legal dual - purpose bike. The course is very much a work in progress, but John Nick is upbeat about the roads in the area. ‘Raglan is a great venue, as there are a maze of amazing gravel and sealed roads in the area. With the GS Rallye course we are going back to our roots, catering for true dual purpose bikes and giving riders loads of options to suit their riding preferences. Big dual purpose bikes are not designed for hard offroad conditions, so there will be a base route comprised mainly of sealed roads plus plenty of gravel options for those who want more adventure.’
Plans are also underway on the social front. At the Raglan Club riders will be treated to a welcome Bavarian barbeque on Friday evening and an after ride dinner on Saturday. Another feature of the Rallye will be displays of BMW GS models, from 1980 to the present day and competitions for the best air and oil cooled GS bikes. All riders entered in the event will also go into the draw for valuable prizes including a BMW riding suit and adventure tyres.
You can follow GS Rallye announcements in Kiwi Rider, and on the new BMW GS Rallye facebook page.
