Zoom Film and Television’s award winning Creative Director, Mark Toia, have produced a stunning visual feast featuring Yamaha’s new fuel-injected WR450F. The WR-F video titled, ReunionReunion, featured local riders Alana and Lachie Columb as well as Antony Sproull and David Coulter
“The film is designed not just to promote the WR450F but also to make people want to get out in the great outdoors and ride,” explains Yamaha’s Brand Development Manager, Peter Payne.
“The first TVC I made was for Yamaha back in 1998. Although prior to this I shot still photography for them,” says Brisbane-based Kiwi, Toia. “As a keen motorcyclist and a fan of the brand, I knew I could create a film that would have an affinity with the motorcycling community, while at the same time hitting the right spots with the general market.”
With a great deal of contacts and experience required for video work in the Australasian realm, Yamaha’s Payne knew how important it was to unite Toia’s incredible cinematography ability with New Zealand’s World renowned Southern Alps to produce something everyone could relate to.
“Toia is brilliant and so is New Zealand’s backdoor,” Payne says with enthusiasm. “Yamaha Motor New Zealand and Yamaha Motor Australia pooled resources to assist Mark by managing the logistics of the production – essentially leaving Mark to concentrate on the technical side of creation. The end result is absolutely first-class, which is little wonder when Mark’s TVCs have become industry standards around the World!

REUNION – THE MAKING OF
The biggest challenge of shooting around Queenstown is the weather. Mark Toia’s hectic schedule meant there was only a small window of opportunity in May, bearing in mind that early season snowfall was also posing as an issue in the mountainous area. Even the film team’s 4WD struggled to access the filming location the day before the shoot.
Glacier Southern Lakes Helicopters’ pilot, Alfie Speight, took care of the aerial shots. While a remote controlled gyro-stabilised, Shotover F1 camera system was fitted to the nose of a Eurocopter Squirrel helicopter.
Capturing the lion’s share of the raw footage, Mark Toia used the revolutionary Red Epic 4K digital camera system. Being an early convert to the Red Epic’s potential, Toia knows exactly how to extract everything from its ultra high-resolution, high speed hardware.
The location property is a working farm at Queenstown Hill beside the Shotover River. The riders are all Queenstown locals and include Alana Columb and Lachie Columb, sister and brother to JCR Yamaha’s 2013 NZ MX2 Champion, Scott Columb; Alana herself is a NZ Downhill MTB Champion and is currently competing overseas. Yamaha ambassador and Junior development coach, Antony Sproull, of Performance MX Coaching and local electrician, David Coulter make up the other half of the riding talent.
Amazingly Mark Toia recorded a majority of the sound effects with his iPhone. The sound track laid over the final video was written especially for the occasion and is called, “Feel Alive”. It was written and produced by, Raf Mikolajcyk, from Brisbane based Jarsonic Studios.
