I count myself extraordinarily lucky to have been born when I was. I’m part of the first generation to duck major war and enjoy a free and prosperous life. And what a life - one with surplus income for toys as indulgent as dirt bikes. Also I count myself lucky enough to live in a first world country where such selfish pleasures are still allowed, because believe me in most parts of the first world off road riding is not as available as it is here in NZ.
Trail riding is the most popular dirt bike recreation in NZ. Trail riding in NZ takes many forms, from a simple blast across a friends farm paddocks to five day Adventure trail rides covering over 1000 km and several variants between.
The most popular trail rides are organised by motorcycle clubs or school groups as charity fund-raisers. These rides can be attended by up to and even over 1000 riders. While I doubt anyone can claim to have kicked off trail riding in NZ for my money it was Roger White who really got the ball rolling with his classic Central North Island forestry rides on the 1970s.
The number of trail rides in NZ have blossomed encouragingly so that now there are literally hundreds of rides each year and virtually one ride each week in every province of the country.
Browsing through these pages will help give you an idea of the scope and variety of rides available.
